BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. —

Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell will leave his role and take a position at Eastern Florida State College, according to the county’s school board.

In a statement released Thursday, a district spokesperson said that Rendell will remain in his role while his departure is finalized with the board, which will move quickly to name an interim superintendent.

“Dr. Mark Rendell has given over two decades to Brevard’s students, and we want to thank him on behalf of everyone in this district. (…) He started his career as a teacher, and his passion for seeing every student achieve and reach their greatest heights has driven him to excellence in every role since,” the statement reads. “Over the years, he has taught and led at Satellite High, Melbourne High, Eau Gallie High, Titusville High, Cocoa High, and Cocoa Beach Junior-Senior High before becoming Superintendent.”

The district named Rendell as its superintendent in May 2023.

“When Mark became Superintendent, our district had slipped from an A to a B and had stayed there for five years,” Brevard Public Schools Chair Matt Susin said in a statement. “(…)He is a steady, dependable leader who works hard, holds himself to a high standard, and expects the same from the people around him. I am grateful for his service, and I wish him the very best.”

The school district at latest has contended with flooding in Brevard County that led to campus closures Monday through Wednesday.

Rendell also recently announced new district-wide safety measures following the death of a 5-year-old student who was injured by a falling video display board in a classroom at Riviera Elementary School.

Eastern Florida State College announced Thursday that it had appointed Rendell as its new vice president of workforce education, “bringing more than three decades of educational leadership experience to one of the College’s most strategically important areas.”

Thursday’s statement from Brevard Public Schools wished Rendell happiness and success in the new role.
