FORT PIERCE, FL (January 7, 2025)— Indian River State College has received approval from the Florida Department of Education to serve as a sponsor of public charter schools, marking a significant milestone in educational leadership for the Treasure Coast region. This authorization makes Indian River State College only the third institution of higher education in Florida to receive this distinction.

The approval, granted under section 1002.33(5)(a)3.b., Florida Statutes, enables Indian River State College to oversee and support charter schools, creating new pathways for educational innovation and excellence in Florida’s public education system.

“The State of Florida’s designation of Indian River State College as a charter school sponsor is truly transformative for the Treasure Coast region’s educational landscape,” said Indian River State College President Dr. Timothy E. Moore. “As a charter school sponsor, Indian River State College will bring the standards of higher education to our local charter school community and create stronger pathways from K-12 to higher education. We are grateful to the state of Florida for this opportunity to strengthen our entire educational community.”

Charter school sponsors play an important role in education by serving as oversight bodies for charter schools. They are responsible for reviewing and approving charter applications, monitoring school performance, ensuring financial and operational compliance with state laws, and maintaining accountability while preserving school autonomy. Sponsors manage the flow of public funds, bear legal responsibility for their schools, and must ensure compliance with federal and state requirements.

“Through charter school sponsorship, we are creating a transformative educational model that builds seamless pathways from elementary school through college,” said Dr. Michael Hageloh, Indian River State College executive vice president of strategic initiatives. “By mentoring young students and promoting academic success at every level, we are developing the next generation of Indian River State College students. This bridge between K-12 and higher education will open new doors of opportunity for students throughout the Treasure Coast region.”

Indian River State College brings significant charter school experience to this new role, as the College already successfully operates two charter schools: the A-rated Clark Advanced Learning Center and Indiantown High School. This established track record in charter school operations demonstrates the College’s commitment to innovative educational models that serve our community’s diverse needs.

The College will begin implementing its charter school sponsorship program with guidance from the Florida Department of Education to ensure compliance with all reporting and data collection requirements. The College will work closely with the Department’s Office of Independent Education and School Choice.
