  • Florida Virtual School Cuts Back After Fewer Students Complete Courses

Florida Virtual School has put a pause on hiring and is taking other cautious financial measures amid a drop in full-time students completing courses over the past year.
The completion of courses is a key metric for the school, which only gets paid if students finish online classes.

After a significant influx of enrollment in recent years driven by the pivot to online learning during the coronavirus pandemic, the number of students completing courses through the school has dwindled.

“Yes, the drop overall has been because of COVID — the return after COVID — in all of the financials, actually,” Louis Algaze, president and CEO of Florida Virtual School, said during a meeting of the school’s trustees Tuesday.

  • Price Inflation Is A Real School Choice Worry. But Right Now, It’s More About Survival

In Iowa, Holy Family Catholic Schools announced that they would be raising prices 10 to 40 percent, depending on a families’ relationship to the parish, given the state’s new education savings account program. In Florida, St. Paul Catholic School announced an increase in tuition for parish members from $6,000 to $10,000, and from $7,000 to $12,000 for nonmembers. Both generated consternation from school choice opponents, who decried “gouging” and a “cash grab.”

Concern about aid translating into skyrocketing prices is well founded—just look at higher education. It is not, however, a serious problem at the moment. Indeed, to have a private sector that can survive against public schools, much less compete on a level financial playing field, schools must be able to raise prices.

  • Public Weighs In On Sarasota Superintendent Search As School Board’s Final Decision Looms

More than two dozen people offered their opinions at Sarasota County’s School Board meeting Tuesday on who the district’s next leader should be, as the search for a new superintendent nears its scheduled conclusion next week.

The previous day, the School Board ranked its top superintendent candidates as follows: Terrence Connor from Hillsborough County, Josiah Phillips from Broward County, Allison Foster from Sarasota County, and Charles Van Zant from Clay County.

But a number of Tuesday’s speakers expressed displeasure with Van Zant as a candidate because he described himself as a “staunch conservative” in his cover letter.

Sarasota Schools has been searching for a new superintendent since the board moved late last year to terminate the previous superintendent, Brennan Asplen. The move was criticized by many parents and staff, with a union poll at the time showing that 97% of staff wanted the district to retain Asplen.

  • Santa Fe College Readies New Charter School

Santa Fe College will start its own charter high school this August, and the first cohort of 75 students has already been selected, coming from schools across Alachua County.

The Academy of Science and Technology will serve high schoolers who want to pursue Career and Technical Education (CTE), specifically in health sciences and information technology. The students will have the opportunity to graduate with their high school diploma, an associate of science degree and at least two industry certifications—all without debt.

Santa Fe College already offers dual enrollment to high school students, and Academy of Science and Technology Principal Bill McElroy said the new school will be another option, complementing other high schools with separate pathways.

“Really, the goal of CTE in general is to give kids options to either step right into the workforce as they leave high school or go on to continue their education,” McElroy said. “I think that’s the beautiful thing about career and technical education, no matter where you’re offering it.”

  • Federal Court Halts Florida’s Transgender Care Ban For Families Who Sued

A federal court on Tuesday issued a preliminary injunction allowing three transgender youths to receive puberty blockers despite Florida Board of Medicine’s rules and a new law, SB 254, banning gender-affirming care for transgender people under 18.

“Gender identity is real,” writes U.S. District Judge Robert L. Hinkle in his ruling. “… I find that the plaintiffs’ motivation is love for their children and the desire to achieve the best possible treatment for them. This is not the State’s motivation.”

This ruling was made as part of an ongoing lawsuit brought by seven Florida parents of transgender children against Florida, arguing that the state’s ban on treatment such as puberty blockers, testosterone and estrogen violates the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause. Three of the seven parents successfully requested and received this preliminary injunction.

In his 44-page ruling, Hinkle indicated that these parents will likely succeed in their claims that SB 254 and the Boards of Medicine rules banning treatment for transgender youth are unconstitutional.

  • Schools Are Part Of The Biden Administration’s Plan For Combating Antisemitism

Citing a concerning rise in reports of antisemitic incidents in K-12 schools, the White House is calling on districts to help address discrimination against Jewish students.

The call for action came as part of a first-of-its-kind interagency plan to counter antisemitism released by the Biden administration Thursday. The plan includes over 100 actions, including a campaign by the U.S. Department of Education to raise awareness about the issue and guidance from the agency’s office for civil rights about discrimination against Jewish students.

“No student should have to face discrimination or harassment because of their race, color, national origin, shared ancestry, such as Jewish ancestry, or ethnic characteristics,” U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement.

  • Charter Schools Are Outperforming Traditional Public Schools: 6 Takeaways From A New Study

A new study shows that charter school students are now outpacing their peers in traditional public schools in math and reading achievement, cementing a long-term trend of positive charter school outcomes.

The study is the third in a series conducted by the Center for Research on Educational Outcomes (CREDO) at Stanford University, which has researched charter school performance since 2000. The third study, released June 6, is notable because it shows superior outcomes among charter school students while the center’s earlier studies showed charter school students performed either worse than or about the same as their peers in traditional public schools.

The researchers used standardized testing data from over 1.8 million students at 6,200 charter schools to determine how student learning at the schools compares to traditional public schools.

  • Why Schools Must Reset And Reboot When It Comes To Insurance

Public entities have unique challenges when it comes to mitigating risks and insuring exposures. They serve their communities through education, public utilities and first responder services, and must do so often with limited resources. Today that effort is even more challenging, insurance experts say.

It’s normal for public entities like schools and other government organizations to be asked to do more with less, says Greg McKenna, National Practice leader, Public Sector, at Gallagher Bassett based in Illinois.

“That’s a normal type of arrangement,” he said. But those entities, especially in the educational world, are seeing added pressure thanks to tough economic conditions, workforce challenges and growing concerns over safety. Now, their “ordinary” challenges are compounding with not so ordinary ones, he added.

  • Accusations Of Lies, ‘Wildly Inappropriate’ Comments Return To Sarasota County School Board

A Sarasota County School Board workshop veered into a culture-wars argument Tuesday.

Board member Tom Edwards said the district was attempting an “erasure of students” with proposed changes to the district’s equity and discrimination policies.

Eventually, it led to two board members walking out, accusing Edwards of bullying them with his comments.

Board members Robin Marinelli and Vice Chair Karen Rose both got up and left the dais near the end of the session, saying Edwards was using the meeting as a political platform.
