  • Accusations Of Lies, ‘Wildly Inappropriate’ Comments Return To Sarasota County School Board

A Sarasota County School Board workshop veered into a culture-wars argument Tuesday.

Board member Tom Edwards said the district was attempting an “erasure of students” with proposed changes to the district’s equity and discrimination policies.

Eventually, it led to two board members walking out, accusing Edwards of bullying them with his comments.

Board members Robin Marinelli and Vice Chair Karen Rose both got up and left the dais near the end of the session, saying Edwards was using the meeting as a political platform.

  • School Board Focuses On Tackling ‘Vapedemic’

The Franklin County Schools have a vaping problem and it’s costing them money, as well as harming the health of students.

At a lengthy discussion at the May 24 board meeting, school board members listened as school officials outlined a situation in which students as young as those in elementary grades are being found using vape products.

And before being confronted in the bathrooms, many are flushing the vaping apparatus down the toilets, which has led to costly removals and repairs.

Anthony Croom, the district’s school safety officer, told the board that with the implementation of the Verkada system in one of the bathrooms, the school is “getting a lot less alerts.”

  • Sarasota School Board Ranks Hillsborough Administrator Atop Superintendent Short List.

The Sarasota County School Board ranked Terrence Connor, a high-level administrator for the Hillsborough County schools, as its top choice to be the district’s next superintendent at a workshop Monday.

Representatives of the search firm McPherson & Jacobson presented six short-list candidates in alphabetical order to the School Board members, and then read from each candidate’s references and showed short videos of the candidates answering pre-set questions. The board later narrowed their ranking to the top four candidates: Connor, Josiah Phillips, current Sarasota Schools interim administrator Allison Foster and Charles Van Zant.

The ranking comes before any one-on-one candidate interviews and meetings with a board-appointed advisory committee, but follows the public posting of all 20 applicants for the position. The board will conduct private interviews with each of the four candidates this week, and reconvene Monday at 9:30 a.m. for a public workshop between the candidates, the board and the board-appointed committee.

  • More States Line Up To Serve Free School Meals To All Kids.

During his long career as a high school teacher, New York state Sen. John Mannion often reached into his own pocket to cover the cost of lunches for kids who didn’t have the funds. “I watched kids get to the end of the line and not have enough money on their cards,” the Democrat said in a phone interview with Stateline as the legislative business of the Senate droned on in the background.

The cafeteria worker would have to tell students that they were over their limit. That’s when Mannion frequently stepped in. Now, Mannion, who is in his second term representing an upstate district, is trying to help on a broader level: He is championing a proposal to offer free school meals to as many kids as the state can afford to serve. New York is one of many states where legislators are trying to make school breakfasts and lunches available to some, if not all, students at no charge. Six states — California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada and Vermont — recently implemented state-sponsored universal free meal programs in schools.

  • Florida Drama Teacher Who Includes Deaf Students In School Shows Will Receive A Special Tony Award

The special Tony Award that honors educators will go this year to a drama teacher in Florida who has closed the gap between the deaf and hearing worlds by having productions performed in both voice and American Sign Language.

Jason Zembuch-Young, artistic director of the public South Plantation High School, in Plantation, Florida, is being honored for “empowering every student to make and be part of theater.”

“I didn’t start out with a mission of let’s be as inclusive as we possibly can. I’ve always championed the underdog because I kind of relate to that,” he told The Associated Press ahead of the formal Wednesday announcement. “What made sense to me was if there’s somebody that’s standing in front of you and they want to work, well, let’s put them to work and let’s figure out a way to have them be as successful as they possibly can.”

Zembuch-Young runs a theater department with more than 150 students participating, which includes putting on both a full-length musical and a play each year and asking his team to be conversant in ASL. He also operates a six-week summer-stock theater camp for elementary and middle school students, using high school drama students as counselors and mentors.

  • Central Florida Teachers Unions Work Around New Restrictions On Dues Collection

Central Florida unions are getting creative when it comes to collecting members’ dues after a law passed making it illegal to deduct these fees from a person’s paycheck.

Ron Pollard is the local president of Orange Education Support Professionals Association. He says without dues, unions die.

Pollard is helping teachers and support staff sign up for an alternative payment platform called e-dues through the Florida Education Association.

“Well, it’s their own personal payment just as you would pay Netflix or any other entities, gym membership or whatever, that’s what it’s about,” said Pollard. “It’s just another way for them to pay their union dues to keep their union strong.”

Under the new law, 60 percent of all professionals represented by a union must be enrolled in that union in order for it to operate in Florida.

  • ‘Wave’ Of Litigation Expected As Schools Fight Social Media Companies

About 40 and counting school districts across the country are suing social media companies over claims that their apps are addictive, damaging to students’ mental health, and causing adverse impacts on schools and other government resources.

Many of these lawsuits, which were originally filed in a variety of court jurisdictions, were consolidated into one 281-page multidistrict litigation claim filed March 10 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Plaintiffs in the case include school districts, individuals and local and state governments. In total, there are about 235 plaintiffs.

The product liability complaint seeks unspecified monetary damages, as well as injunctive relief ordering each defendant to remedy certain design features on their platforms and provide warnings to youth and parents that its products are “addictive and pose a clear and present danger to unsuspecting minors.”
