It was a long road to get there, but Brevard County school bus drivers are getting a pay increase.

What You Need To Know

    • Brevard County School bus drivers can expect a pay increase soon
    • Current pay is $15 an hour for drivers
  • The planned increase is $5 an hour, starting in July

The Brevard school board is boosting driver pay by $5 an hour — from $15 now, to $20 an hour beginning in July.

Many drivers left the job because of low pay and student disciplinary issues.

An audit in April showed the severity of the problems, with a survey showing eight out of 10 drivers reported that student behavior made them feel unsafe.

A plan expected to be implemented next school year includes an assistant superintendent focused solely on discipline.

Mark Rainey has been a trainer and driven for Brevard Public Schools for over two years.

“I can’t tell you how elated these drivers are,” Rainey says. “They are over the moon that this board took care of them.”

Now the district has the task of filling the 90 vacant driver positions.

The board is set to vote on the pay increase at its board meeting June 27.
