Leon County School Board to discuss NIL policy for student athletes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A policy to allow student athletes to benefit from their name, image and likeness is expected to be discussed by the Leon County School Board in an upcoming meeting.
Board members talked about the measure at a workshop earlier this month.
The Florida High School Athletics Association gave the green light for NIL deals, but there are some restrictions, like not promoting products during school hours and not wearing school logos for NIL activities.
“They can’t have people, and this is defined in language; they cannot recruit them to certain schools, so you cannot pay a student to come to a school to play. You can pay them for, or they can engage in some kind of monetary contract for school they are at,” Leon County School Board member Alva Smith said.
Smith went on to say that Leon County Schools’ proposed policy complies with FHSAA rules.
The district is also aware of other school systems reporting issues with student athletes jumping schools for different sports, but hopes some of those concerns will be addressed by state lawmakers.
