  • Sarasota Schools Posted Its Superintendent Candidates. Meet All 20.

As the Sarasota County school year ends, the school district’s superintendent search is heating up, as it published a list of all 20 candidates for the open job this week.

The collection of 20 applicants includes widespread geographical representation, including from California, Illinois, Texas, Mississippi, New Jersey, Colorado and Florida, among others. Only one current Sarasota district employee applied — the district’s current interim superintendent Allison Foster, whom the School Board appointed following the removal of Brennan Asplen in December.

Asplen’s removal came following a conservative-leaning makeover of the board caused by the 2022 elections. Minutes following the new majority being sworn in, the new board moved toward terminating Asplen, who had been with the district since 2020, later prompting criticism that the superintendent’s treatment would make it harder to recruit a high-level education administrator.

The applicant pool includes current and former superintendents, charter school executives and high-level district administrators. Several applicants are also candidates for other school district superintendent openings in Florida.

  • School Uniforms Could Be Required In Broward Schools.

Broward students may have to replace those hoodies and leisure shorts with polos and khakis when they step onto school campuses.

The Broward School Board is considering requiring uniforms or a “unified dress code” starting in the 2024-25 school year, in another measure to try to improve school safety and compete with charter schools, where uniforms are the norm.

Uniforms are already common in many district-run elementary schools. Some middle schools require them but few high schools do. Right now, a School Advisory Council at each campus votes on whether to require them.

But uniforms or a “unified dress code” could be required for students in all grades, under the proposed policy.

This could be a major fashion shift for high school students.

“In my own school, it’s normal to see people completely dressed in an alternative style or early 2000s, full-on baggy style,” said Skilla Penso,15 a freshman at Fort Lauderdale High, who said she’s ambivalent about uniforms.
  • Gov. DeSantis Signs Music Education Program Bill.

‘Florida has nation-leading early childhood and early literacy programs, and this bill will further help schools build a strong learning foundation for our youngest students.’

Florida students in kindergarten through second grade could get more opportunities to have music instruction in the classroom, thanks to a bill signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The bill (SB 478) cements a pilot program for music education into law and expands it statewide. It was sponsored by Sen. Keith Perry, a Gainesville Republican, and approved unanimously in both chambers.

“Music education has been shown to help children with language development, brain development and fine motor skills,” DeSantis said in a released statement. “Florida has nation-leading early childhood and early literacy programs, and this bill will further help schools build a strong learning foundation for our youngest students.”

  • Florida Audit Finds Accounting, Management Issues With Miami-Dade School District.

A recent audit of the Miami-Dade County School District has revealed several issues with accurate record-keeping and sound financial management.

The Florida Auditor General found nine separate issues, ranging from IT and security concerns to failing to correct deficiencies in annual inspections.

The first issue found was that the school district had not yet given all of its employee-appropriate training in mental health awareness, a training program designed to identify when a student might need mental health services. The program was allocated $13 million in fiscal year 2021-22 to be established by the district school board, and as of May 2022, the district had 18,228 district school employees that still needed to complete the training.

  • Should Schools Assign Summer Homework? Educators Weigh In.

School’s almost out for summer. Should students clear out their lockers and leave empty-handed—or laden down with stacks of math problems and required reading lists? Will teachers warn of repercussions for failing to turn in summer work assignments upon returning to school in the fall, or simply advise students to have fun and stay safe?

It depends on whom you ask.

It turns out that not all educators share the same perspective on whether to assign summer homework, who needs it most, what it should consist of, and how to make sure it gets done. Education Week put the question to state teachers of the year and representatives of statewide principals associations. Here’s what they had to say.

Play and pleasure reading topped the list of responses to the question: What summer homework should students be assigned? Teachers (of both young and older students) were more likely than the principals who responded to suggest that kids need a break in the summer.

  • School Board Postpones Vote On Clear Backpacks After Parent Cites A State Law.

A Broward schools clear backpack requirement could be delayed or derailed after a parent found an obscure state law to slow down the plan.

The School Board is postponing a vote on requiring clear backpacks for the new school year from June 13 to July 25, after a Plantation parent, Nathalie Lynch-Walsh, asked the board to first hold a workshop.

A state statute on policy rulemaking requires the School Board to hold a workshop if requested “by any affected person, unless the agency head explains in writing why a workshop is unnecessary.”

“Essentially this tables clear backpacks?” Board member Torey Alston, a clear backpack proponent, asked. “Is this what we’re saying, because we need to say that if that’s what we’re saying.”
