Florida schools plan 9/11 events for students who weren’t born in 2001

The history lesson: Schools across Florida today will mark a national day of service and remembrance for the tragedy known to most Americans simply as 9/11.
Teachers have received materials to instruct students on the attacks that occurred 24 years ago today. Some will hold special events.
Area school leaders noted that, as the events become more distant, it’s vital to keep the memories alive.
“As we get older, it’s important to remember that our K-12 students were not born in 2001, and it is our duty to teach them about the events and the actions that took place on this day,” Pinellas County superintendent Kevin Hendrick said.
Pasco County superintendent John Legg recalled being in a classroom at the charter school where he worked, watching the news as it happened.
Current students “don’t have the memories. We want to kind of share some of those memories with them, and both the bad and the good that followed,” Legg said. “The good of the unity of the country, which oftentimes is overlooked.”
That’s one lesson he and others said doesn’t get lost these days, especially as the nation commemorates and honors the thousands who lost their lives on 9/11.
