  • Reducing Childhood Poverty, Increasing 3rd Grade Reading Levels Are Key To Florida’s Economic Future

About 18% of the children in Florida are living in poverty

Education, housing, and health — and lack of access to it —are drivers of prosperity and the Florida Legislature tackled them all during the 2023 Session.

“From universal choice, to the ‘Live Local Act,’ to the expansion of KidCare, it was a monumental team effort and I’m proud of how our members came together, Republican and Democrats, to focus in on the most critical issues facing Florida’s families,” House Speaker Paul Renner said in a taped speech he made for The Florida Chamber Foundation’s 2023 Florida Prosperity & Economic Opportunity Solution Summit in Jacksonville.

“Our work is not done. We will continue to mission until every child in Florida has a path to prosperity.”

  • Top Education Official Defends Decision To Restrict Presidential Inauguration Poem

A top Florida education official is defending a Miami Lakes public school’s decision to restrict elementary students from reading the poem recited at President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

Local officials pulled Amanda Gorman’s poem “The Hill We Climb” from the elementary grades section of the library at the Bob Graham Education Center after a parent claimed it was meant to “cause confusion and indoctrinate students.”

The decision — by a committee of teachers, a media specialist and the school’s principal — to restrict access to the book at the K-8th grade school was first reported by the Miami Herald.

In an interview with WLRN, Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz said the Miami Lakes school was following policy.

  • ‘I See Myself In These Students’: 20,000 Immigrant Children Join Miami-Dade Schools.

For the first time in two decades, the Miami-Dade County public school system is growing, according to district officials.

That’s due in large part to the historic number of students who have moved into the district this year from other countries. Schools that had been under capacity for years are now seeing their classrooms fill up.

On a recent morning, Emelia Bruscantini’s classroom at Milam K-8 Center was calm and quiet, her students working diligently on math problems — some in English and some in Spanish.

“We just have one new [student] this week,” Bruscantini said. “Just came in Tuesday. Another one that came in last week, she went to the doctor to get her shots today.”

  • Amanda Gorman’s Poem For Biden’s Inauguration Banned By Florida School.

A poem written for President Joe Biden’s inauguration has been placed on a restricted list at a South Florida elementary school after one parent’s complaint.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, poet Amanda Gorman vowed to fight back. Her poem, “The Hill We Climb” was challenged by the parent of two students at Bob Graham Education Center in Miami Lakes, along with several books.

“I’m gutted,” she wrote. “Robbing children of the chance to find their voices in literature is a violation of their right to free thought and free speech.”

Gorman, who at 17 became the country’s National Youth Poet Laureate, said she wrote the poem “The Hill We Climb,” so “all young people could see themselves in a historical moment,” and that she’s received countless letters and videos from children who were inspired to write their own poems.

  • Ron DeSantis Is Running For President. What Will That Mean For K-12 Schools?

Over the past three years, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed laws that have limited how teachers can talk about race, gender, and sexuality; barred transgender girls from playing girls’ sports; and greatly expanded school choice, with Republican lawmakers elsewhere often following his lead.

His department of education rejected over 40 math textbooks from K-12 schools after accusing publishers of attempting to “indoctrinate” students.

He’s also committed $2 billion to raising teacher pay and increased per-pupil funding in the 2022-23 school year.

Now he wants to be president. And his aggressive and controversial stances on education are likely to thrust K-12 schools into the election spotlight.

  • In Pasco, Referendum Money Means Raises Averaging 9% For Teachers, Staff

When campaigning for a property tax referendum last August, Pasco County school district officials promised raises to all nonadministrative employees.

On Wednesday, representatives for the district and the workers agreed on exactly how much those raises would be.

In a quick negotiating session, the sides signed a deal that would provide teachers and support staff increases averaging about 9%, with veteran workers getting even more. Teacher payments would range from $2,000 to $7,245, based on years of teaching credit, while support staff would get between $.80 and $3.50 more an hour, depending on their years of service in the district.

  • Volusia Schools Looks To Hire 700 Instructors, Support Roles Ahead Of Next Year.

It’s the last week of school for many Central Florida students, but it’s also the time in which school districts start ramping up efforts to fill vacancies before the next school year.

The national teacher shortage still hitting most districts hard. In fact, the latest numbers from Volusia County schools show over 700 vacancies going into next school year.

Elizabeth Albert with the teacher’s union said that number could also grow even higher over the summer if more staff retire or leave.

“We don’t have a problem with recruitment in Volusia County,” said Albert, President of Volusia United Educators.

  • Largest VW Settlement Payout To Date Brings More Electric Buses To Florida.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) awarded over $57 million to seven school districts for the purchase of 218 electric school buses through the state’s Volkswagen Mitigation Settlement Trust fund.

These are Florida’s first electric school buses, and the investment represents the largest single allocation of Volkswagen settlement funds for electric school buses nationwide to date, explained DEP spokesman Jon Moore.

Broward County Public Schools has begun to take delivery of its buses via $15.7 million in VW money. The 60 new Blue Bird electric buses, which the manufacturer said in April was its largest such order fulfillment at the time, will serve as replacements for older diesel school buses built on or before 2009.

  • How One Miami High School Combines Digital Transformation With Educational Goals.

Alex Seage, director of technology and innovation at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, Florida, shared how he helped lead a digital transformation on the campus in part thanks to his perspective as a newcomer to the education sector.

Not many high school IT staff get their start in cruise line IT and digital signage like Alex Seage, but he says it prepared him for dealing with students. After all, Seage quipped, there is not too much of a difference between rambunctious cruise ship passengers after a few margaritas and the average rowdy high schooler.

Now serving as senior director of technology and innovation at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, Florida, Seage explains the power of digital signage in the education space, a growing area for the digital signage industry.
